Maintaining Standards

Letting Standards Slip

Unwired thumbnail image

Ms M is studying usability and one example that came across her radar is the classy and friendly Unwired designed by HotHouse Interactive

Constructed as XHTML STRICT it now fails validation due to some pretty basic errors.
It seems like the contract may not have included ongoing maintenance.

I guess this is just another example of market place reality that too easily devalues Standards based design.

Does this happen because...

  • the upside of Standards are not sold to the client.?
  • maintenance is too expensive?
  • its not seen as important?

How can Standards be more easily maintained so they don't fall through these real world cracks in the floor?

Re the site.... I would like it more if they would stop that Flash animation after it's first cycle.

wow-factor,
Must you attach your agreement with political points of view to this site? I understand that you have every right to display information as you please, but just because you can - doesn't mean you should. Please consider that people from all points of view refer to your site on a daily/weekly basis for information on the latest web standards and examples of outstanding web design. In the future, I would encourage you to leave out the political rhetoric as not to alienate visitors to your site and distract from the excellent technical and design commentary you provide.

Cordially,

Tim , thanks for your post. I guess there is a long and a short answer. I'll stick with the short.

I reserve the right to post very occasional non web related articles on this site. If these offend, all I can say is sorry, however if such posts were dollar bills you would be a poor man collecting them.

Comments noted. Cheers.

You've asked a big question I don't have an answer for, but I do like the Unwired site, and the functionality their company offers! Pity their prices aren't the most competitive.

Go Aussie!

Your right there Adam. I guess they need some competitiors. Iburst may go head to head with them and help drop the price.
I cant see Telstra playing in this field.

Re the Standards issue, I guess it just points out the benefit of winning a site maintenance clause in the contract. The issues with this site are easily fixed so it wouldnt send Unwired broke :)

Great personal site you have there as well :)

We built the Unwired site to be as usable and accessible as possible. You are right in concluding that we passed the site over to them once complete and the flash elements have been added since the handover...

Hi Mark, congratulations on the site, its design and usability. It seems a shame that things don't stay the same, but I guess it is their site.
Nice work from Hothouse.
